ERIC SOMERS, tonmeister, sound designer, and photographic artist

The Sandbook Studio is a digital media design and production service centered around the creative and technical work of Eric Somers, a media artist for over 50 years.

Mr. Somers started his career in the production of fine art television programs, especially classical music.  In that capacity he worked with many major musical artists including Eugene Ormandy, Thomas Shippers, Wolfgang Sawallich, Richard Goode, Radu Lupu, Rudolf Buchbinder, Benita Valenti, Barbara Nissman and many others.

As a television artist, Mr. Somers was always interested in the relationship of visual experience to aural experience and, thus, has always worked in both visual and aural media.  His MA thesis dealt with the problems of presenting paintings on television and showed how music could be used to help the viewer understand visual art.  He has since published a number of scholarly papers, and a book chapter in "Another Eyesight" (Dog Rose Press, ISBN 0-9528367-3-4), about how sound can aid visualization and how visual design can serve as an organizing structure for sound art.

In working with fine musicians he learned to be a discerning listener and studied the techniques of high end audio recording.  He has learned to capture concert sound and the spoken word with an authenticity that is sometimes lacking in popular "hyped" media. He also creates sound designs for theatre, film, video, and art installations.

Eric Somers got into computer art and electronic music very early, working with computer animation in 1969 and electronic music in 1972.  He was a pioneer in the use of digital photography, especially in photographing and preserving rare works of visual art.  He also works as a fine art digital photographer producing work for sale.  (See "Photo Gallery and Services" below).

In addition to sound and visual art, Eric Somers has been an educator for many of his working years, teaching at Creighton University, Drake University, The University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point, Valdosta State University, and, for 29 years, in the State University of New York system at
Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, New York.  In addition, he has given acclaimed workshops and presentations in the US, Canada, Europe and Japan. He has presented several master classes in sound recording technology at The Juilliard School, in New York City.  He is available for workshops in classical music concert recording; voiceover and audiobook recording; audio theatre (radio drama); algorithmic sound composition for dance, theatre and visual art installation; music concrete composition; foley art for film; color management for digital photography; digital reproduction of fine art; and printing of photo books using on-demand publishing.

The Sandbook Studio is located in Poughkeepsie, NY, just north of New York City in the scenic Hudson River Valley.
